Fun Facts

Rockets

  • The Saturn V rocket, used for the Apollo missions, is still the most powerful rocket ever launched and produced 7.6 million pounds of thrust at liftoff.
  • Rocket fuel can reach temperatures above 3,300 C (6,000 F), hotter than the surface of the Sun.
  • The first liquid-fuelled rocket was launched by Robert Goddard in 1926. It only flew for 2.5 seconds and reached 12 metres high.
  • SpaceX's Falcon 9 booster can land itself back on a drone ship at sea, allowing it to be reused many times.
  • Rockets do not push against air, they work in the vacuum of space by ejecting gas in one direction and moving in the opposite direction.
  • The sound of a rocket launch is so loud that NASA sprays large water volumes on launchpads to absorb sound energy.

Boats

  • The world's largest container ships are around 400 metres long, longer than four football pitches end to end.
  • Wooden boats have been used for over 10,000 years.
  • A ship floating in saltwater sits slightly higher than in freshwater because saltwater is denser.
  • The fastest boat ever recorded was Spirit of Australia in 1978, reaching 511 km/h.
  • Icebreaker ships have rounded hulls so they can ride up and crack ice with their weight.
  • The Titanic's anchor chain links were each roughly the weight of a small car.

Drones

  • NASA's Ingenuity helicopter on Mars was the first powered aircraft to fly on another planet.
  • Some high-performance consumer drones can exceed 290 km/h.
  • Drones are used for tree planting in reforestation projects.
  • A drone's propellers often spin around 8,000 to 10,000 RPM.
  • Long-endurance drones can fly for more than 30 hours continuously.
  • Package delivery drones are already used commercially in selected regions.
